This is a very rare and charming antique Victorian fire screen, also known as a parlour fan or face screen. These handheld screens were used in the 1800s to protect a lady’s face and makeup from the heat of a hearth fire, preventing redness and discomfort. This particular example features beautiful hand embroidery with a floral decoration on a neutral-coloured background. The handle is made of turned wood. This is a truly unique piece of Victorian history and a wonderful addition to any collection of antique textiles or decorative arts. There are threads coming loose around the border of the embroidered section, and the silk backing has a tear and is fraying away at the edges.
