Description 1950’s Doris Geddes Silk Jersey Cocktail Dress Doris Geddes was an Australian fashion designer who ran The Little Shop in Raffles Hotel in Singapore for 30 years from about 1947. Elizabeth Taylor was one of her regular customers. I have been fortunate to purchase a few of her stunning samples from the 1950’s, which have been kept in storage since the shop closed. All unworn, mostly with the original swing tags and in very good vintage condition. This fabulous small black silk jersey draped cocktail dress was in the style of Madame Gres couture design. Many of the designs from Doris Geddes were inspired by couturiers from Paris. Madame Gres was trained as a sculptor before turning to fashion design in the 1930’s.Her style was synonymous with Grecian Goddess style draping in silk jersey and was favoured by such Hollywood starlets as Marlene Deitrich, Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly, Vivien Leigh, Dolores Del Rio, Barbra Streisand. More recently, stars such as Angelina Jolie have worn vintage Madame Gres designs to gala events. This is an amazing piece of fabric cutting and draping! The painstaking attention to detail, regard for the human body and minimalistic effects can be seen in the styling of this extraordinary dress. The waist has a ruched belt attached in places with hooks and eyes at the side. Side metal zip, The front skirt is fitted with a Greek drape on the left side, stitched into the waist under the belt, and attached at the hem inside the skirt. This gives it movement and volume. Bust 88cm Waist 73cm Hips 102cm Length 107cm Check the sizes as this is a very small fitting dress. Unworn with original Doris Geddes swing label and size description handwritten. Astonishing condition from smoke free home. Rare opportunity to purchase a piece of fashion history. 1950’s Doris Geddes Silk Jersey Cocktail Dress
